We Are Fired Up. Are You? You Will Be…Read On!

March 23, 2015
Ok, Parents.

Here’s what has happened. The long and short of it is our legislators continuously find every reason and means to NOT remove Common Core from our kids’ schools.
The TRUTH is: They CHOOSE not to act.
The TRUTH is: This is just one of many issues that may or may not get their attention, and well, maybe next year.

Although last year was an election year and the Governor didn’t want anything controversial, so it couldn’t happen then.
The TRUTH is: They all admit, including the Governor, this was the one consistent issue they hear about from the PEOPLE of this state.
But, they “Don’t have the votes”?
But, we “Can’t pass it out of committee because we don’t have the votes on the floor”?
But the thing that makes me the MOST enraged, right now..is MY KIDS having to deal with Common Core on a DAILY basis. EVERY DAY, I have to watch my kids live and breathe Common Core. EVERY DAY is one more piece of them affected by Common Core. The people in Topeka DO NOT FEEL that and most certainly DO NOT care that REAL KIDS are dealing with this EVERY DAY. My KIDS, your KIDS come behind their posturing and their un-informed minds and their personal agendas and their political tactics.

Do you know that very FEW legislators have kids in public schools?
Do you know that very FEW legislators have kids young enough to currently be in K-12 school?
Do you know that nearly all legislators with kids young enough are either homeschooling or sending their kids to non-public school institutions?

Do you know that, even on the Education Committee, legislators have not personally taken the time to find out what’s REALLY happening in classrooms all across the state? They call their sons or daughters to find out how they should vote! Or they call their religious leader connections! Or they spew “talking point” verbiage we all know isn’t true, like, “Kansas College and Career Ready Standards are named such because they were developed by Kansans”!

Do you know that legislators openly admit to “following the direction” of other legislators, so “if you want me to vote differently, you need to get with ‘the one’ I am following.” And when we attempted on MULTIPLE occasions to do just that, the “leader of the pack” wouldn’t meet?
Do you know that the “leader of the pack,” a homeschooler by the way, who believes that not all Common Core materials need to be removed from schools, therefore nearly all attempts go “too far” in removing Common Core, believes that we have to protect the state’s ability to collect personally identifiable data on children, and believes that you, the parent, should not have the right to determine the programs that are best for your children, just as she does in personally deciding what is best for hers?

Do you know that the “leader of the pack” worked to actively kill this bill
by saying things about it that are not true (thank you Sec. Kobach for your clarification),
by saying that “The votes aren’t there,” and
by introducing an 11th hour substitute bill that, as pointed out by committee members, “pretty much maintains the status quo.”

Do you know that, just today, a legislator said that we needed to ”Get more parents to the capitol” in order to sway legislators to change their vote?
After ALL the phone calls and ALL the emails (most of which we were told they just delete without reading) and ALL of you who DID GO TO THE CAPITOL and ALL of you who have worked tirelessly in your communities to inform others of what is happening to our kids, they have the audacity (FB prohibits me from using more appropriately strong language here) to say that?

The TRUTH is: Our legislators are not truly HEARING you and acting accordingly.
The TRUTH is: They will act according to what THEY think should happen, leaving you, the parent, at their mercy, with NO RIGHTS to control and direct YOUR CHILD’S education.

We are working on the next steps in this crusade to extract, through the legislative process, something that never had to go through a legislative process to be brought into our state.
We will not sit down or be quiet or stop. We can’t.

As a parent,
I will continue taking steps to never allow my child to take any of the assessing tests.
I will continue to not approve my child’s participation in academic technologies that track and mine data on my child.
I will continue to actively employ interventions to counter the social mind-wrangling my kids experience at school every day.
I will continue to COMMUNICATE my DISSATISFACTION with my legislator’s inaction to my legislator.

Blessings to you all in your own heart-felt wrestling and day-to-day battles with this.

I will not stop, because I cannot.

Welcome to the week – articles, updates and more!

Samuel Adams

There is nothing wrong with national-level education yardsticks. We’ve had them for decades: the SAT, Advanced Placement tests, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, etc. What is wrong is imposing one standard on everyone, which ignores that all children are unique and no standards-setters omniscient. But that is exactly what Washington is doing with the Common Core.

It’s apparently not important to the Common Core State Standards Initiative that David Coleman never taught a day in the classroom in order to be the lead architect in the crafting of the standards from which the majority of children will be taught.  I’ve looked at his background and don’t see that he was/is an artist.  But his claim to be one of the most unqualified people to be involved with the standards development extends to his explaining why standards should be imposed one of the more creative disciplines: Art.

The next time that a supporter of the Common Core standards says there are no critics on the left, tell them to read this post by Paul Horton.

Arne Duncan says that the opposition to the Common Core standards emanate from the Tea Party and other rightwing extremists. The media have bought that line, and in some states it is surely true.

But recently the media have noticed that the Common Core has outspoken critics on the left, even though they can’t understand why anyone on the left would oppose standards that allegedly produce equity, excellence, critical thinking, and everything good.

Paul Horton is one of the nation’s most articulate and eloquent opponents of the Common Core standards.  Paul Horton teaches history at the University of Chicago Lab School. He is not a member of the Tea Party; he does not wear a tin foil hat. He is a serious and well-informed teacher.

Every week it seems I receive three or four letters from people who are establishing new schools or reforming old ones.  These letters are most encouraging, and all of the writers, without exception, are dedicated to restoring what is called a “classical” education.  Sometimes that implies the study of the true classics, the literature of ancient Greece and Rome.  More often it simply means a return to sanity, both as to what the children are to read and learn, and as to how they are to learn it.

OKLAHOMA CITYState Rep. Joe Dorman, D-Rush Springs, is the likely Democratic nominee for governor of Oklahoma this year. He is a long -shot in the Sooner State, where statewide political offices are dominated by Republicans, including incumbent Mary Fallin.
Still, Dorman – pegged as a moderate during most of his career in the Legislature — might garner fans among those state conservatives most passionately opposed to the controversial “Common Core” standards.

The latest Common Core articles…

The Common Core bait-and-switch, funded by your taxes – Joy Pullmann
Common Core supporters know many voters and politicians dislike federal meddling with education, because it is not authorized by the Constitution, is utterly ineffective and destroys the right of parents to bring up their children as they see fit.

Not with my child you won’t!
Common Core Standards are completely untested experimentally yet are being inflicted on virtually every student in the entire U.S. from K-12 with NO PREVIOUS TESTING. This is an egregious violation of basic ethics and good science and shows the developers’ absolute disregard or ignorance of potential harms to children. The EPA conducts more testing for the food dyes in Kool-Aid than has been conducted on Common Core which kids will live with for 8 hours a day for 12 years.

Senators Stand Up to Obama and Duncan’s Common Core in D.C
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) will introduce a resolution strongly denouncing the Obama Administration’s coercion of states into adopting Common Core State Standards by conferring preferences in federal grants and flexibility waivers.  The resolution is co-sponsored by Senators Tim Scott (R-South Carolina), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma), Thad Cochran (R-Mississippi), Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi), and Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming).

Standardized Absurdity: A Preview of Common Core Testing, Part 1 – Dr. Terrence Moore
Let’s put the Common Core to the test. Specifically, let’s look at a pilot standardized examination created by Smarter Balanced, one of the two testing consortia formed to create exams aligned to the Common Core, the educational regimen that prevails in forty-five states in the nation.

How Common Core Devalues Great Literature – Anthony Esolen
The Common Corers get things exactly backwards. You do not read The Wind in the Willows so that you can gain some utilitarian skill for handling “text.”  If anything, we want our children to gain a little bit of linguistic maturity so that they can read The Wind in the Willows.  That is the aim.

Anti-Common Core Lawsuit Filed in Utah
In this instance a child in Alpine School District who is very bright and academically advanced, was prevented from advancing to his appropriate skill level and has been psychologically damaged as a result of the public education system’s insistence on pounding square pegs into round holes to make all children common. Common Core hurts children both at the upper and lower end of the learning spectrum by forcing them to advance at the pace of the group. It is true conveyor belt education in the worst possible way.

Paul Schwartz, Data Specialist and Kansas Dad, shares his concerns about data and Common Core.

Dr. Mary Byrne discusses the background, development and implementation of Common Core State Standards.

Updates & Articles – February 1

Senator Roberts Introduces Bill to Block Federal Intrusion on State Education Decisions
Kansans Against Common Core leaders Kristin George and Megan King applauded the legislation saying, “We support efforts to stop Common Core, and reclaim local control of education in Kansas.  We appreciate Senator Roberts introducing legislation to limit the federal overreach in education, and we urge Kansas legislators to follow his example in restoring local control.”

Michelle Malkin – School Choice and Common Core: Mortal Enemies
Homeschool mom of six and blogger Karen Braun of Michigan sees the threat to her choice, too. Her trenchant message: “True school choice allows a parent to choose any school that meets their child’s needs, not just those that adopt Common Core State standards and assessments.”

What the heck is a 21st Century Skill – Missouri Education Watchdog
It has been a long hard search, but I have finally found what a 21st century skill is. Up until now all I could get was the “But it goes to 11.” Spinal Tap answer.

What’s in a name? Trouble, if it’s Common Core – Washington Post
***PLEASE READ! And remember that Kansas College and Career Ready Standards and Common Core Standards are the SAME!  We know better… just changing the name of Common Core will NOT be enough. We have taken the time to research and learn the facts. It is much more than a name or “just standards” – the entire package MUST be addressed.

New York Teachers turn on Common Core – Politico
The board of the New York state teachers union this weekend unanimously withdrew its support for the Common Core standards as they have been implemented — a major blow for Common Core advocates who have been touting support from teachers as proof that the standards will succeed in classrooms nationwide.

A Formal Response to the CCSSO Letter on Student Data Privacy – Truth in American Education
36 groups in 26 states co-signed this letter written by Dr. Karen Effrem, President of Education Liberty Watch and co-founder of the Florida Stop Common Core Coalition, in response to a letter that members of the Council of Chief State School Officers sent to U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

THANK YOU to everyone who joined us at the Capitol during January.  It was a great experience!  Concerned Kansans from Dodge City to Olathe came to visit with legislators.  We also appreciate everyone taking time to write, email, call and tweet!  Please continue these efforts.  Our voices are being heard.

Call to Action – Week 4: Learn & Share

We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas!

Only two weeks until the start of the next legislative session on January 13th, 2014.  We need every concerned Kansan to help spread the truth about Common Core and participate in the effort to restore local education in Kansas.

This week we want you to LEARN & SHARE about Common Core!
We are often contacted by people who are opposed to Common Core, but say they are not comfortable discussing it with others.  That is very easy to understand!  The entire package of Common Core is very complicated and can seem overwhelming. That is why this week we want to provide you with some great links for information – basic to very in-depth.

Please take time to learn more about Common Core.  After you spend time doing your own research about Common Core, share with friends and family.  Many people have still not heard about Common Core, and it is so important to share the truth and make them aware of the changes happening in education.

Here are some great papers, articles and videos to help you learn more,
AND SHARE with others!

Teacher slams scripted Common Core lessons that must be taught ‘word for word’

What has changed is Common Core State Standards.  I was given a curriculum and told by my administration to teach it “word-for-word.”  In a meeting with my administration, I was reprimanded with “Don’t forget, standards drive our instruction.”

Common Core Even Affects Letter Grades
As schools adopt standards-based grading, whether to tie instruction more closely to Common Core or for the other benefits proponents claim, some parents and teachers are not impressed. They say the grading scale is confusing and grants too much authority to those outside classrooms.

7 Links to Evidence of Federal Control of Common Core
We are in unrepresented dire straits: In no way do voters or teachers (or states themselves) control what is now set in the Common Core standards.

The PTA Does Not Represent Parents or Teachers. It Represents Special Interests.
Education Week (which has received Bill Gates funding) reports that the NY PTA (which has received Bill Gates funding along with the National PTA) is bullying parents and threatening to turn their children to Child Protection Services if children are not offered up for Common Core assessments.  From We Need Great Leaders Now More Than Ever:

New York Principals Send An Open Letter to Parents
An open letter signed by 545 Principals across New York State was addressed to the parents of elementary, middle, and high school students in New York.

Secretary Duncan, Yes Your Power Does Have Limits
A noisy opposition to Duncan’s reforms has emerged — and it only grew noisier this month when Duncan dissed “white suburban moms” for opposing the new Common Core academic standards because the tough tests made their kids look bad.

Dads Too, Mr. Duncan

–countless– men and fathers are publically and boldly standing up against Common Core. It’s not only “white, suburban moms” who oppose Common Core, and it’s not only the right or the left, either– despite what the U.S. Secretary of Education has so absurdly claimednot by a long shot.

More on the Common Core: Achieve, Inc., and Then Some
I have written a number of posts related to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). In this post, I examine a key organization in the creation of CCSS: Achieve, Inc. Whereas my reading Achieve’s tax documents served as the launch for this post, it certainly did not stop there.

Sandra Stotsky Responds to My Common Core-Achieve Post

CCSS ELA Validation Committee member Sandra Stotsky read my post and and added the following information in the comments. Since this additional information has also received next to no publicity, I wish to post Stotsky’s comment as its own post, for all to easily read.

Kansas’ 8th Grade Student Math and Science Performance Measured Globally for the First Time
Kansas students score well above international average

*Please note: This was BEFORE Common Core.
Wurman Testimony on Common Core in Ohio
The default Common Core high school mathematics is misleadingly touted as “college-ready” yet it will lead at best to community and non-selective colleges. The retarded pace in K-8 and the slow and deficient content in high school will further restrict the number of qualified students able to pursue STEM careers rather than increase it as promised.

*Starting next Monday on facebook and website*
Help us grow the grassroots and spread the truth about Common Core.
We will be posting a simple action you can do each week
